Your chain touches every gear you shift and every watt you put into the pedals, yet it's usually the last thing anyone thinks about — until it starts skipping, squeaking, or snapping. A little regular attention goes a long way, and none of it takes more than a few minutes.

Clean Before You Lube

Lubricant on a dirty chain just turns grit into grinding paste. Wipe the chain down with a rag first, working it backward through your fingers link by link, before you add anything. If it's been a while, a dedicated degreaser and a chain-cleaning tool will pull out the packed-in grime a rag alone can't reach.

How Often

As a rule of thumb: wipe and check after every wet or muddy ride, and do a full clean-and-lube every 150–250 km, sooner if you ride in dust or rain a lot. Apply lube sparingly to each roller, let it sit for a minute, then wipe off the excess — a chain that looks wet is usually over-lubed and will just attract more dirt.

Signs Your Chain Needs Replacing

• Noticeable stretch when measured with a chain checker tool
• Skipping under load, especially on the smallest cassette cogs
• Visible rust that doesn't wipe away
• Stiff links that don't flex smoothly around the derailleur pulleys

Catching a stretched chain early is the cheapest maintenance decision you can make — replace the chain in time and you'll often save your cassette and chainrings too. If you're not sure where yours stands, bring it by and we'll measure it for you in under a minute.

A helmet only works if it fits, and fit is the one thing you can't judge from a photo online. Before you look at colors or vents, get the sizing right — everything else is secondary.

Get the Fit Right

• The helmet should sit level, about one finger-width above your eyebrows
• The side straps should form a "V" just under each ear
• The chin strap should be snug enough that you can fit one finger under it, no more
• Give your head a shake — a well-fitted helmet won't shift or rock

Most brands run slightly different shapes, so it's worth trying a few on in person rather than guessing your size from a chart alone.

Road vs. Mountain vs. Commuter

Road helmets prioritize weight and ventilation for long, steady efforts. Mountain helmets extend further at the back of the head and often include a visor for rougher terrain and lower speeds with more variable impacts. Commuter helmets tend to trade a bit of ventilation for built-in lights or a more casual look you don't mind wearing off the bike too. None is "better" — it depends on how and where you ride.

When to Replace a Helmet

Replace your helmet after any crash that involves a head impact, even if you can't see visible damage — the foam absorbs impact by compressing, and it doesn't reset. Outside of a crash, most manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every 5–8 years as the foam and straps age.

"Truing" a wheel means bringing it back into a straight, round line by adjusting the tension of individual spokes. A wheel is really just a balance of tension all the way around the rim, and it only takes one spoke drifting out of that balance to introduce a wobble.

What Causes a Wheel to Go Out of True

New wheels settle as spokes seat in during the first rides, which is completely normal. Beyond that, hard hits — a curb, a pothole, a rough landing — can pull a section of spokes loose unevenly. Spokes can also loosen gradually over months of riding, especially on a wheel that sees a lot of load.

DIY vs. Workshop

A very minor wobble can sometimes be nudged out with a spoke wrench and a careful hand, but true wheel building is a skill that takes practice — over-tighten one spoke and you can pull the whole wheel further out of round, or worse, crack a rim. For anything beyond the slightest wobble, it's worth having it done on a proper truing stand.

Signs Your Wheel Needs Attention

• A visible side-to-side wobble when you spin the wheel
• Rim brakes rubbing intermittently as the wheel turns
• A "pinging" or ticking sound from a loose spoke nipple
• The wheel feeling less stable through fast corners

Caught early, truing is a quick, inexpensive fix. Left alone, an out-of-true wheel puts uneven stress on the rim and spokes and can shorten the life of the whole wheel.

We hear the same thing a lot from new e-bike owners: "It's just a bike with a motor, right?" Mechanically, mostly — but that motor changes how hard everything else works, and that changes how often it needs attention.

It's Not Just a Bike Anymore

Motor assist adds torque to every pedal stroke, which means your chain, cassette, and chainrings are under more load than they would be on a regular bike — and they wear noticeably faster as a result. The extra weight of the motor and battery also puts more stress on brakes, wheels, and spokes than most riders expect.

What We Check That a Regular Tune-Up Won't

• Battery contact points and connector condition
• Motor mounting bolts, which can work loose under torque
• Firmware and system diagnostics, where supported
• Drivetrain wear at a shorter interval than a standard bike
• Brake pad wear, since e-bikes are heavier and stop differently

None of this is complicated, but it is different from what a regular bike needs — and it's easy to miss if your mechanic (or you) is applying standard-bike intervals to a system that wears on its own schedule.
